Patient care services at Salem Township Hospital are provided to ensure safe, effective, and timely care and treatment. Patient Service Departments are those that have direct contact with patients. The full scope of patient care is provided only by those professionals who are also competent to assess patients and plan care based on findings from the assessment. Patient support is provided by a number of individuals who may not have direct contact with patients, but who support the care provided by the hands-on care providers.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
The Salem Township Hospital Emergency Department provides Level III emergency services. The Emergency Department is responsible for the immediate recognition, evaluation, treatment/ stabilization and disposition of patients in response to any medical or surgical emergency. Salem Township Hospital contracts with Midwest Emergency Department Services to provide 24-hour emergency medicine physician coverage.
RURAL HEALTH CLINIC
The Rural Health Clinic is concerned with providing healthcare services seven days a week from 11AM to 7PM, to care for the sick and injured citizens of our community and those who are traveling in the area. The Rural Health Clinic is staffed daily with a mid-level practitioner.
MEDICAL-SURGICAL UNIT
The Medical-Surgical Unit has 22 beds and provides services for acute care patients with medical disease, as well as patients having surgical procedures performed.
SPECIAL CARE UNIT
The Special Care Unit provides specialized care continuously on a 24 hour basis, and is established for patients who meet admission criteria.
SURGERY
Surgery services are provided for adult and pediatric patients. Both inpatient and outpatient surgeries can be performed in the department. The following surgeries/procedures are available at Salem Township Hospital:
- General surgery, Orthopedic surgery, Gynecologic surgery, Ophthalmic surgery, ENT surgery, urologic surgery and Minor surgery.
- Endoscopy procedures: Colonoscopy, Gastroscopy, Proctoscopy and Laryngoscope.
EDUCATION AND INFECTION CONTROL
The Infection Control Department focuses on protecting patients, employees and hospital visitors from disease or infection. The Infection Control Department also educates employees, patients/their families, Auxilians and the community regarding infection prevention and control.
The Education Department is concerned with house wide mandatory in-services and other job related training, assists with general nursing orientation, nursing competency testing, and community health education.
PATIENT CARE SERVICES
RADIOLOGY
The Radiology Department provides diagnostic radiology testing and services. These services are under the direct supervision of a qualified licensed physician, Radiologist. Department service(s) are available as non-emergency, scheduled, and emergency, for all patient customers. Radiology services include general radiology, CAT scan, MRI, bone density, mammography, and ultrasound.
NUTRITIONAL SERVICES
The Nutritional Services Department prepares and delivers nutritious and well balanced meals to the patients. Instructions or counseling on modified diets and on food/drug interactions as well as nutritional screening and assessments is also provided. Outpatients are also seen by appointment at the physicians request for diet counseling. Meals are provided for employees and visitors in the cafeteria during set hours between 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM. Vending machines are available 24 hours a day.
RESPIRATORY CARE
The Respiratory Therapists at Salem Township Hospital are board certified by the National Board for Respiratory Care and are available 24 hours per day. These are just two reasons why the department is the only one in Southern Illinois that has earned the distinction of Quality Respiratory Care Provider (QRCR) for five years in a row.
The American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) started the QRCR program in 2003 to help consumers identify facilities utilizing quality practices in the field. Respiratory Therapists are health care professionals who provide a wide range of treatments and diagnostic tests to treat patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, AIDS, lung cancer, and other lung-related conditions. Respiratory Therapists at Salem Township Hospital are cross-trained in cardiology testing such as EKG, heart monitoring and stress testing. The department also employs an EEG/Cardiology Technician who performs diagnostic procedures.
The Respiratory Care Department provides inhalation therapy such as: hand held nebulizer, aerosol therapy, IPPB, sputum induction, pediatric aerosol tents, and oxygen therapy. Other respiratory services include incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy and postural drainage, patient assessment and patient education. The Respiratory Care Department is trained to care for patients who require critical and emergency care for breathing problems. The following procedures are available 24 hours per day, seven days per week: EKG, Holter Monitor, Cardiac Event Monitor, Breath Alcohol Test, Peak Expiratory Flow Rate, Pulse Oximetry, and Sputum Collection. The following procedures are performed Monday through Friday: Exercise Stress Testing, Pharmacological stress test, EEG and Pulmonary Function Testing including: Spirometry, Lung Volumes, Plethysmography, Carbon Monoxide Diffusion Capacity and Bronchoprovocation by exercise or Methacholine Challenge. Overnight Sleep Studies, CPAP Titration Test, and Multiple Sleep Latency (MSLT) Tests are performed Tuesday through Friday.
REHABILITATION SERVICES
The Rehabilitation Services Department provides quality evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of patients using modalities, exercise, manual technique and education to return patients to their prior level of function. The Department is concerned with treating patients with neuromusculoskeletal disorders, pain syndromes congenital diseases and open wounds. Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy provide treatment and evaluation for outpatients, inpatients and Home Health patients with physicians orders. The department is staffed Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays as needed.
CARDIOPULMONARY REHABILITATION
The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Department is to provide monitored, progressive exercise and education with medical supervision to individuals with cardiac or pulmonary disease. The department provides heart monitoring during exercise, exercise prescription, body fat percentage, pulse oximetry, and patient education. Patient education includes diet, risk factors for heart disease, cholesterol levels, stress reduction, cardiovascular procedures and many other areas. Patient exercise is performed in the monitored rehab area within the Physical Therapy department. The department is open 7:00 AM -4:00 PM Monday thru Thursday.
LABORATORY
The pathology and clinical laboratory service operates twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven days a week. The function of the department is to perform diagnostic testing in a timely manner and to promote the wellness of patients in the community.
PHARMACY
The Pharmacy Department prepares, dispenses and distributes medications for inpatients and outpatients. Patient and staff education regarding medications is also provided.
CASE MANAGEMENT
The Case Manager is concerned with evaluating and assessing all in-patients to determine any discharge planning needs and to prepare patients for the next level of care. The planning is not limited to placement in long term care organizations, but includes provision for or referral to services that may be required to improve or maintain the patient=s status. Interdisciplinary conference meetings are held weekly to evaluate patient plans and identify anticipated discharge/resource needs. The Case Manager is specifically concerned that quality care is provided to all patients, regardless of pay source, in the most appropriate setting. The department is available five days per week, from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with the exception of weekends and holidays.
